We Are Cornwall’s Communities: A Documentary Film Project – An Update

About the Project

Cornwall Lived Experience Partnership (CLEP) and Screen Cornwall recently collaborated on an exciting documentary film project, supported by the Cornwall Community Foundation. This project set out to capture the voices and experiences of people from across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (CIoS), celebrating the richness of our communities and offering creative, accessible ways for people to engage with decision-makers at all levels.

Our goal was to highlight the voices of those who are often overlooked and empower them to be a driving force in shaping a more inclusive and just Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. The film serves as a critical platform for amplifying the needs and desires of our communities, directly contributing to a vision of a sustainable and equitable future.

Filmmaking Workshops – Building Skills & Confidence

As part of this project, we organised filmmaking workshops for various communities within the Cornwall Lived Experience Partnership. These workshops provided participants with filmmaking and interviewing skills, equipping them with the tools to share their stories in their own way.

The workshops were incredibly well received, with participants gaining confidence in storytelling, filming, and interviewing. Participants shared positive feedback about the experience, highlighting how it empowered them to express their voices and perspectives creatively.

Post-Production Update – What’s Next?

We are now in the post-production phase of the project, working hard to bring together all the incredible stories and perspectives that were shared. Screen Cornwall team is carefully shaping the final film to ensure that every voice is represented and that the final piece truly reflects the diversity and vibrancy of our communities.

We are excited to announce that the film will be ready soon, and we can’t wait to share it with you! Stay tuned for updates on its release and how you can watch it.

The Journey So Far

As part of this project, we invited people from all walks of life across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to share their stories. Participants responded to one or more of the following key questions:

  1. What is living in Cornwall like for you?
  2. What do you wish people knew about your community?
  3. What does it mean to be heard?

People submitted videos, audio recordings, and photographs, sharing their experiences, challenges, and hopes for the future. These contributions have been essential in shaping this documentary, making it a truly community-driven project.

We worked across 17 lived experience organisations, ensuring that people from all backgrounds had the opportunity to take part. Our ‘How To’ filmmaking guide and additional support resources helped many participants capture their stories in creative and authentic ways.

The Impact of This Project

This documentary has been more than just a film – it has been a movement. Through this project, we:

  • Encouraged creative expression and empowerment: Many people became filmmakers for the first time, using their own voices to tell their stories.
  • Provided a platform for community voices: The film showcases real-life experiences and perspectives that are often missing from mainstream narratives.
  • Drove forward positive change: The project reinforces the importance of lived experience in shaping a more inclusive Cornwall and Isles of Scilly.
